I remember as a child lying on the ground, flat on my back in the warm grass, watching the birds as they flew around in the beautiful blue sky. I would think, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I could fly like that, the wind in my hair, looking down at the Earth from above?” It turns out, you can get that experience, flying through the trees and over meadows in the beautiful countryside near Hanging Rock State Park, at Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tour.
Over the past few years this destination right here in Stokes County has become very popular, attracting adventurous people from all over the state and beyond, and for a good reason. Over 22 cables, through wooded areas, over meadows and across a ravine, offer tons of fun for people of all ages.
Carolina Ziplines has an interesting story. The ziplines installed on this property were actually the first in North Carolina, and possibly the East Coast. It was the dream of Robert and Joanna Nickell, who had traveled to Costa Rica many times and wanted to bring this exciting adventure to their own home. Today the company is owned and operated by the Bollman family, who put their heart and soul into the opereation. “We just want to create a place where families can come and have fun,” Barbara Bollman said.
And fun is exactly what you have at Carolina Ziplines! One of the great things about this place is they can take anyone age 3 and up, so even families with younger children can get out for an adventure. Carolina Ziplines’ group of talented guides make sure you’re harnessed in safely and your helmet’s on properly, and then off you go, flying through the trees.
Another bonus is Carolina Ziplines is open year round! Are you feeling cooped up, and bordering on cabin fever during these cold days of winter? Luckily we live in an area that is blessed with some comfortable temperatures even in the middle of winter. And it’s this time of year that we really need to find ways to get the kids outside, enjoying some fresh air! Take advantage of the nice-weather days in the coming weeks and head over to Carolina Ziplines. This time of year the experience is exhilarating. With the leaves off the trees, you have a more open view of the space around you while you’re riding along the ziplines in the woods, and out in the meadow, the crisp, cool air and bright, Carolina blue sky are all part of a view that is certain to lift your spirits.
Then make plans to come back again in the summer, for a totally different experience. The lush, green surroundings of the wooded areas and a chorus from the birds that live there make you feel like you’re in a jungle. And once you get going, the breeze immediately makes you forget the heat and humidity of our southern summers.
Carolina Ziplines tours last about 2 hours, and prices are $80 for adults and $40 for kids ages 3-12, with discounts often available. They are open Tuesday through Sunday year round.
