Our own Hanging Rock State Park is an absolute treasure. With great camping, trails that are accessible for families with small children or more challenging for serious hikers, and a wonderful swimming area, this park in the midst of the Sauratown Mountains draws visitors from across the state and even farther.
It’s exciting that so many people come to visit Hanging Rock State Park each year, but we want people to know how many other opportunities there are in Stokes County to experience the outdoors and have great adventures. On May 16, the Friends of the Sauratown Trails and other local business people will host an outdoor festival, Hanging Rock Outdoor Fest, to get the word out about just how much there is to take advantage of here in Stokes County.
The festival includes an expo to be held at the visitor’s center at Hanging Rock State Park. We’re excited to have all sorts of local businesses and organizations planning to set up booths to share what they have to offer with everyone at the festival, from hometown folks excited for the event to out of town guests who happen to come into town to take part in the festival. Up at the visitor’s center you’ll find representatives from Carolina Ziplines, Froggy Waters Outdoors, the Sauratown Trails Association, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Center, local bed and breakfasts, and much more.
The best part about this festival is we’re not just telling people how much fun they can have, we’re showing them! Down at the Dan River Company there will be more activities going on. There will be paddle boards out on the pond from Nature Play Outdoors, and all-terrain segways to try out on the trails. Then in the afternoon there will be a Boater Cross series to see who can handle the river the fastest! It’s easy to be a part of the races, with on-site registration and warm-ups starting at 3:00 p.m.. Then at 4:00, the races begin, with head to head competition in heats of three.
Whether you’re an old friend of the Dan River, or you’ve never been and you’ve always wanted to try your hand at kayaking down the water, this is the day to be at the river. All the best of what Stokes County has to offer will be out for you to experience. And what better way to enjoy the great outdoors than with other people who are all looking to have a great time?
