What a great day on the Dan River with Dan River Company! The river is absolutely beautiful, with amazing rock cliffs and clear water. For just $20, the owner provided shuttle service to a private inlet, and gave a very informative ride upriver. The float back to the car was smooth and easy for beginner paddlers. My friends and I had a fantastic time and took some great pictures. The float took us a bit longer than the estimated 3 hours (more like 5.5), so it's a good idea to set aside extra time if you like to hop out and look for arrowheads and cool rocks. Also, if the water is low (we had 95 cfm), be prepared for some walking. For a smoother ride, it might be better to go when the water is higher. The sweet, brown and white dog near the cliffs was a memorable highlight! He was so sweet and jumped right in my girlfriend's boat.

Dan River Company was such a pleasure to work with! They called me back right away, answered all my questions, and were just genuinely enjoyable to talk to. I was a little late and they were more than accommodating and gave me grace. When I got there, the shuttle driver was super friendly, loaded my gear, and walked us through what to expect on the float. Everything he told us lined up perfectly, and the river itself was even better than I imagined, absolutely beautiful. The tips they gave made it easy to know exactly where to get out, so the whole day was smooth and stress-free. Honestly, it exceeded every expectation.

Hear me, stout-hearted folk, for I did embark upon the mighty Dan with naught but a paddle and grit, my vessel procured from the honorable outfit called the Dan River Company. The river did carry me through wild realms most fearsome: turtles that eyed me with suspicion, herons that rose like thunderous spirits, and currents that pulled as though intent to test a man’s resolve. Yet I prevailed, steering yon craft with the skill of a seasoned voyageur, and lo, my spirit was lifted by the beauty of forest and sky mirrored upon the waters. At journey’s end, near spent with hunger and thirst, I staggered ashore and beheld a miracle most wondrous: the Green Heron Ale House. Their beers, a veritable treasure trove of barley and hop, did restore my strength as manna in the desert. Each pint was a sermon of cheer, each draught a hymn to civilization. And as Providence smiled upon me further, a food wagon stood ready, its victuals so hearty that I near wept with gratitude. Thus I declare, let all adventurers heed my words: here ye shall find the wild majesty of the Dan, and afterward, the blessed comfort of feast and ale. Five stars, for there be no higher.

The Dan River is a very beginners style river great for families. While we typically like more adventure, it is a nice float with a few areas of excitement like jump rock. I also saw two otters on this latest trip!. Dan River Company has nice boats for rent or you can use their shuttle service for $20, which is what we did. Very nice people helping load and drive. Don't forget to stop in the Grey Heron after you finish your float! Incredible beer selection with great outdoor seating.
